(AP) ? Martin Brodeur made 27 saves and survived a third-period punch to the chin by old buddy Mike Rupp as the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers, 4-1, Monday night in Game 4 to even the Eastern Conference Finals, 2-2.

Zach Parise had two goals and an assist and Bryce Salvador and Travis Zajac beat Henrik Lundqvist less than four minutes apart in the first period in a series where the intensity and the emotions are picking up.

Brodeur even notched an assist in the third, on Parise's empty netter, capping a game in which the Devils maintained their composure and bounced back from a 3-0 shutout in Game 3, while the Rangers took several uncharacteristic penalties and seemed rattled from the start.

Game 5 is Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

This game was one where the chippiness increased with each period. New York's Marc Staal whacked Patrik Elias in the back of the knee with his stick in the second. Ryan Callahan, the Rangers captain, and New Jersey's Ilya Kovalchuk tussled. And finally, Rupp, a former Devil who scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for New Jersey in 2003, jabbed Brodeur in his crease in the third after a stoppage in play.

That almost set off a free-for-all among the players on the ice, especially after Brodeur reacted like he had been hit by a roundhouse right.

The best action, though, was along the benches where Devils coach Peter DeBoer screamed at Rangers coach John Tortorella in what he must have perceived was an intentional attack on his goaltender in a game in which the Rangers were once again dominated. The two coaches also sniped at each other on Sunday, complaining about pick plays and embellishing penalties. Indeed, these are the makings of another classic series in this rivalry.

The Rupp punch came about four minutes after Parise scored on a power play to give New Jersey a 3-0 lead and for all practical purposes, ended the game.

Ruslan Fedotenko ruined Brodeur's bid for his 25th career playoff shutout with just over five minutes to play.

The Rangers pulled Lundqvist, who had shut out the Devils in Games 1 and 3, with less than three minutes to play, and Brodeur made two outstanding saves to keep it a two-goal game.

Parise finally iced the game with his second of the game and sixth of the playoffs. It was a clearing pass that found its way into the net. Brodeur notched the assist on the play for his fourth of the playoffs.

This game ? which did not include New York's Brendan Prust, who was suspended for elbowing Anton Volchenkov in Game 3 ? was decided early because the Devils finally found ways to beat Lundqvist.

The Devils dominated much of the play in Game 3, and the first period of Game 4 was even worse for the Rangers. They looked slow, were outhustled on nearly every shift, and they didn't get a shot on goal until roughly halfway through the period.

By then, New Jersey already had a 1-0 lead, on a goal by Salvador, and was cruising.

Salvador's see-eying shot through a half-dozen players from the left point sneaked by the Rangers' netminder for New Jersey's first goal since the third period of Game 2. New Jersey's Jacob Josefson, playing for the first time since breaking his left wrist on April 3, failed to deflect the shot on the way in, and New York's Anton Stralman seemed to screen Lundqvist, who seemingly never saw the wristshot.

Zajac's goal gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 11:59. It was New Jersey's first two-goal lead in the series and Parise had a big hand in it.

New Jersey's Dainius Zubrus sent the puck along the boards and New York's Michael Del Zotto made two mistakes. He didn't flag down the puck and then he allowed Parise to skate past him, setting up a 2-on-1. Parise lifted a pass over the stick of a prone Dan Girardi, and Zajac one-timed the pass into the upper portion of the net before Lundqvist could react.

Parise extended the lead to 3-0 early in the third period, just four seconds after Derek Stepan was sent off for high sticking. Kovalchuk took a shot from the point that Lundqvist could not control and Parise whacked the rebound into the net.

NOTES: Veteran Petr Sykora, who had played in every game for the Devils this season and won the 2000 Stanley Cup with New Jersey, sat, as Josefson returned to the lineup. ... With Prust forced to miss the game, the Rangers dressed seven defenseman, including Stu Bickel who returned to the lineup after sitting for Game 3. ... Rangers rookie forward Chris Kreider had his three-game goal scoring streak snapped. ... The Devils' win was played on the 18-year anniversary of New Jersey's 3-1 victory over the Rangers in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. That was also a Game 4, and that also tied that series, 2-2. New York went on to win that series in seven games.

Long Distance Relationship Advice | Vin DiCarlo

Long Distance Relationship Advice

So maybe there are certain limitations to what you can do with a computer - but if ever there was a time to be close to each other with thousands of miles apart, now is it!

Long distance relationships are such a controversial topic that when we received this e-mail question, we thought we just had to publish the answer for everyone to see.

"Dear Vin,

I'm going to be moving quite far away within a couple of weeks. So far in fact, that visiting each other on a regular basis would be prohibitively expensive. Maybe once or twice a year at most.

Should I just break up with her here and now and save us both a lot of suffering, or is there hope that our relationship could survive this ordeal and - just maybe - come out stronger than it ever was? I'm willing to try long-distance relationships, but quite frankly I have no idea what it would entail, nor do I know what the chances of success are...

Thanks for any help!

Adrian from New York"

Adrian, you're not the only guy out there facing this problem. Sometimes our education or professional lives take us far away from the people we care about. Other times, we're wondering whether meeting people online who live in other countries is worth it, with a faint hope in the back of our mind that maybe we'll get to meet them one day.

There used to be a time when the only means of long-distance communication was through old-fashioned snail mail. But with current technology, you can both hear and see the other person as if they were right next to you. If ever there was a time when a long-distance relationship was most likely to succeed - now would be it!

I've been where you are - and it can work!

Speaking from personal experience, I once found myself in a similar situation, even though I never thought I would. I cared quite a lot about the other person, and I wanted to give it a go. Good thing too! Because it turned out to be one of the most mutually beneficial and successful relationships that I've ever had.

But, like most ventures, in order for your long-distance relationship to have any chance of success, you need to have both realistic expectations and a good plan. If you know you'll only be able to fly out to see each other a couple of times a year, don't tell each other you'll be able to do it every month.

Communication is the key to success

As for planning, you need to prepare how you're going to communicate with each other. Just a decade ago, an international call of any significant length would have cost a fortune. Nowadays, you can use Skype or many other services for free, and you get to see the other person too!

You should also think about what you're going to be sacrificing. It's possible that by being in a committed relationship with someone that far away, you'll be missing out on opportunities nearby.

Make those few moments together really count!

Although in my particular situation I was able to connect with my girlfriend and see her either every weekend or every second weekend, I strongly believe that the key to my success was my ability to give her 100% of my attention whenever we were together.

Even though at the time I had an incredibly busy lifestyle due to the business goals that I was working towards, by giving my complete attention to her those few days that we were together - I made them really special and memorable.

When we were together, I would completely switch off my phone, switch off the TV, and just focus on putting a whole week?s worth of love into my girlfriend.

Because I was so focused on the positives of the relationship, I never had to deal with the negatives! In fact, in some way, the short bursts of being together prevented us from experiencing some of the boredom other couples might have when they spend every day together.

There were never any fights, there were never any arguments, there was never a boring moment. So there is definitely potential for long term relationships to work, but there's also a danger!

Make sure you do it for the right reasons

Probably the best bit of advice on dealing with long distance relationships that I can give is to question your motivation. Sticking with a long term relationship just because you don?t want to hurt the girl, or because you're not ready to handle a breakup, is the completely wrong reason. Perhaps consider a scenario in which you can sustain your relationship, but you also give each other the flexibility of being able to see other people.

So I think the next step for you is to sit down with your girlfriend and get a really clear idea about what it is that she actually wants, about what you want, and then seeing if you guys can find some common ground.

I believe that understanding women and the way they think is of paramount importance when it comes to any kind of relationship, long distance or otherwise. As a result, we've devised a guide based on scientific methodology, to help you understand the mind of women, the female psychology, and how to get the results you want from your dating life. It took us a while, but it's finally ready - Pandora's Box!

Commercial Real Estate Heading for a Deep Freeze | EconMatters

By Anthony Harrington via?QFinance

One of the clich?s of real estate investing is that you can make more of everything but you can't make more land. The implication is that real estate has to be a one way bet. More people competing for a share of an asset that can't be expanded very readily must equate to constantly rising prices, or so the law of supply and demand might seem to suggest.

The constantly increasing cost of office and residential property in the world's top cities provided an obvious case in point through the 20th century and for much of the first decade of the 21st Century. Before the 2008-2009 global financial crash, investments in commercial and residential property regularly generated year on year total returns of over 15 percent. When both rental income and capital growth were combined, the returns in the more spectacular years could be north of 20%. No wonder real estate caught the attention of investors.

However, what this clich? about the nature of land does not take into account, is that the real estate sector is particularly prone to developing asset price bubbles which go unnoticed in their formative stages. Before the catastrophe of the United States sub-prime mortgage debacle, the loosening of lending criteria for home ownership in the US was justified again and again on the grounds that there had never been a collapse in house prices in the US. Before the crash of the Tokyo stock market property values in Japan had soared to unprecedented heights, with one bedroom flats selling for in excess of the Yen equivalent of a million dollars.

China today is desperately trying to craft a soft landing for its economy despite a massive bubble in the Chinese property market. The Spanish economy is floundering largely because its major and minor banks all have massive amounts of underperforming property loans on their books. The Irish Government's efforts at bailing out its banks, which blew up after a decade of disastrous lending on property, left Ireland needing billions in EU bailout funding, and its citizens are now facing a bleak future.

The lesson to be drawn from this is that investing in property is very far from being a safe, one way bet. Property has its attractions and its disadvantages as an asset class. The enduring disadvantage is that by its nature, property is an illiquid asset class with extremely lumpy exits. When you invest in a building you are clearly not thinking of selling it next week, and probably not in the next five to ten years. Property funds do churn their assets, but by comparison with active equity managers, they move in a geological time frame. The long term nature of property investment is well suited to pension funds, which are quite happy to tie money up for a twenty to thirty year time horizon.

However, as well as having attractions for institutional investors property has a place in the balanced portfolio of individual investors, particularly where the person concerned is still several years away from retirement. Then too, the fact that commercial property generates a more or less dependable stream of rental income means that it also comes into consideration as a way of building or sustaining income through retirement. Nevertheless, while property might look to a naive investor to be the Holy Grail of investment, able to deliver both income and capital growth, it remains an extremely complex asset class and one that needs to be handled with care, particularly at the present time.

A uniquely difficult set of conditions that are going to persist

The "proceed with care" warning that should accompany any property investment applies through all stages of the economic cycle. However, it is especially true today. Healthy commercial and retail property markets require two things, namely a ready supply of debt financing and a robust economic environment. Neither of these conditions pertains at present in any major Western economy. In its survey of global property trends for 2012, the accountancy firm PwC warns that we are moving into an era for property that is probably going to be a decade or so in duration and that this period "will be characterised by more negatives than positives in its early years.[1]"

Among the biggest negatives has to be the fact that as far as lending on property is concerned, there is now a credit crunch that is getting to be as bad as that which followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.

There are two main reasons for this.

The first has to do with the European sovereign debt crisis which had reintroduced fears about counter party risk, since the major European and US banks tend to be highly exposed to the threat of "haircuts" if some of the peripheral countries go down the Greek route and renegotiate their debt. The US banks are not holding that much dodgy European sovereign debt, but they have written themselves into any potential disaster scenario by providing European banks with insurance on their sovereign risks, in the form of Credit Default Swaps.

The second reason for the growing credit crunch is that in order to meet the banking regulations laid out in Basel III, banks have to increase their Tier 1 capital ratios by around 9% by June 2012.

Banks can do this in one or both of two ways. They can go to the market and raise additional equity finance, or they can reduce their loan portfolios, since the amount of capital they need is proportionate to the amount of risk on their books. Property lending carries a substantial capital reserve requirement so it makes eminent sense for banks to pull out of commercial property lending, or to make dramatic cuts in the amount that they are prepared to lend.

This is extremely bad news for the property markets since it is the equivalent of putting a "deep freeze" on the market. Buyers can't find the funds to buy. Developers can't fund speculative office and warehouse developments. Sellers don't put property on the market because the prices they need can't be achieved, and just about everything grinds to a halt. We are not there yet, it has to be said. There is still a substantial volume of buying and selling going on in core metropolitan markets such as London, Paris and New York. There are "hot spots" such as some Asian emerging markets and Central European markets such as Poland. But the medium term outlook for the sector is far from benign.

Babe Ruth equals big bucks.

A baseball jersey worn by The Bambino sold for more than $4.4 million Sunday, a record for any item of sports memorabilia, according to the buyer and seller.

SCP Auctions, based in California, said the circa 1920 New York Yankees uniform top is the earliest known jersey worn by Ruth and it fetched $4,415,658 at the company's April auction, which ended Sunday. That price broke the previous record of $4,338,500 set in 2010 for James Naismith's founding rules of basketball.

Lelands.com said it submitted the winning bid for the jersey, which had been displayed for years at The Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum in Baltimore. The road top has "New York" written across the front and the Hall of Fame slugger wore it shortly after he was sold to the Yankees by the Boston Red Sox for $100,000 following the 1919 season.

Suzan French, a spokeswoman for Lelands.com, said the company plans to sell the jersey privately rather than re-auction it.

"Such a spectacular piece will find a home with one of our private clients who truly appreciates its historic significance," Lelands.com president Michael Heffner said in a statement.

Ruth retired in 1935 with 714 home runs, the major league record for nearly 40 years. Hank Aaron broke that mark and then was passed by Barry Bonds, who finished with 762.

In addition, Ruth's 1934 New York Yankees cap that was owned by former major league pitcher David Wells sold for $537,278 at auction. The colorful Wells bought the cap for about $30,000 from a collector and famously paid homage to his idol by wearing it on the mound with the Yankees during a game on June 28, 1997.

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor's New York Giants Super Bowl ring from the 1990 season went for $230,401.

Those items also set records, for a baseball cap and a Super Bowl ring, SCP Auctions said.

"This proves again that Babe Ruth is 'king' in the sports memorabilia world," SCP Auctions president David Kohler said in a statement.

Also included in the auction was the high-end baseball card collection belonging to former big league All-Star Dmitri Young. Top prices were a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie card ($537,954) and a 1955 Roberto Clemente rookie card ($432,690). The proceeds will help Young begin a foundation to help kids and student athletes near his home in Ventura County, Calif., SCP Auctions said.

Other auction highlights included:

? 1924-28 Babe Ruth H&B professional model game-used bat ($591,007).

? 1968 Mickey Mantle autographed New York Yankees game-worn road jersey ($366,967).

? Circa 1931 Lou Gehrig New York Yankees game-worn home jersey ($275,706).

? Bobby Thomson's 1951 "Shot Heard 'Round the World" cap ($173,102).

? Jackie Robinson 1950 All-Star game professional model bat ($133,234).

Not tomatoes prevent prostate cancer | Pharmacy secrets revealed

During eight years of follow-up, 1320 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in men in the study. The results do not support the use of lycopene, beta-carotene, carotenoids and other researchers write. Focus on food, not pills

The men also completed questionnaires assessing their health, diet and lifestyle in general.

The new study, led by Peters, is one of the most important and rigorously designed not to address the problem. And the results were unequivocal lycopene.

McCullough said the message of these studies and this is that until more is known, individual carotenoids should not be taken in high doses as a supplement.

Dr. Dr. Aylor is the director of geriatric medicine and director of Alzheimer?s dementia of the Center for Geriatric Medicine at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

?Nutrients simple does not always give you an overview,? she said. ?We have seen that some years ago in studies of beta-carotene.?

There was no significant difference in blood levels of lycopene in men who developed prostate cancer during follow-up and those without.

What can you say about the influence of diet and lifestyle on the risk of prostate cancer? Not much, says Peters.

However, beta-carotene is associated with an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

As nutrients such as beta-carotene makes carrots orange, lycopene is responsible for the bright red tomatoes. Both compounds are among the pigments synthesized by plants and are known as carotenoids.

The news could prevent the tomato seemed too good to be true, and apparently it was.

?It would be nice if it were true. [Eating tomatoes and tomato products] would be cheaper and easier to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and would be a great public health message,? said Peters. ?Unfortunately, it is not so easy.? Colorful nutrients

?I recommend that people try to get their carotenoids and other nutrients in the foods we eat,? he said. ?This way they get the nutrients in its natural form with other nutrients in these foods.?

But subsequent studies have been contradictory or inconclusive, Fred Hutchinson assistant professor and researcher Ulrike Peters, PhD, MPH, tells WebMD.

The researchers thought intake of beta-carotene could prevent lung cancer in smokers, but in the end find more cancers in smokers who took antioxidant supplements.

There is growing evidence that obesity increases the risk of a man for the disease and suggested that a healthy diet may be protective. But neither association has been demonstrated.

Lycopene, found primarily in tomatoes and tomato products, has had little impact on the risk of a new study conducted by the National Cancer Institute in Seattle and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Often times you need to obtain a lawyer tips also it helps to know that these lawyers provide free initial consultation. Their legal costs are flat. For example, if you tend to be facing misdemeanor prison lawsuits, it can cost you around $1, 500 to be able to $5, 000 intended for defense. There are nonetheless many reputable and also ethical lawyers out there which will help you with your condition. Once you hire a legal counsel, you will be educated of one's case standing as well as the criminal law you have violated. You should pay 25% to 50% on the fee and this will likely serve as pay in. The criminal case will never end with the hiring of a legal help. In fact, there are nonetheless other expenses you need to attend to. It will include witness service fees, depositions, process computers, transcripts, records reports, deposition rooms, specialist witnesses, and government documents. These things are billed to you personally, the client and it's different from the actual legal fees. You should be aware of these expenses to be able to already calculate if you possibly could afford to buy them. Going to court is expensive and you need to understand a great deal with the criminal law to stop violating them in the future.

Contamination at Kinloss probed

RAF Kinloss in Moray is to be the focus of a new investigation into radioactive contamination, BBC Scotland has learned.

It is linked to the use of "glow in the dark" paint in aircraft from WWII.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has already threatened to designate Dalgety Bay in Fife as radioactive contaminated land.

But the site is now just one of nine locations across Scotland which are under scrutiny.

It does seem that there's an absence of records about where material was deposited?

End Quote Dr Paul Dale Sepa

Environmental reports, known as Land Quality Assessments, prepared for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) show the authorities have been aware of "potential human health and environmental risks" at Kinloss since at least 2004.

The documents also suggest that radiological contamination could extend to land which was sold and is no longer part of the base.

It is believed that more than 1,000 aircraft were dismantled at Kinloss after the end of WWII. Instruments coated with "glow in the dark" paint containing radium were burned and buried at the site.

The Scottish government is to write to Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond calling for the "full disclosure" of records relating to radiological contamination at Kinloss.

Richard Lochhead, Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, said: "It's very clear that here we have another case where we need absolute transparency from the MoD.

Scottish sites which are, or have been, contaminated with radium

  • Dalgety Bay, Fife
  • RAF Kinloss, Moray
  • RAF Machrihanish, Argyll
  • RM Condor, near Arbroath
  • Former Defence Aviation Repair Agency site, Almondbank, near Perth
  • Stirling Forthside (remediation work completed)
  • The locations of three other sites have not been released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency

(Source: MoD/Sepa)

"We have to understand what the situation is at that site, particularly if it is the case that we're talking about land that has been sold off and is no longer owned by the MoD. People living there, or close by, will want peace of mind."

Fred Dawson, a former head of policy for radiation protection at the MoD, said it was vital that accurate records were kept of land which may be contaminated to allow future users to ensure radioactive material is not disturbed.

He added: "As long as radium remains buried, it's of no great concern. The problem is if it's disturbed. For instance if you're redeveloping a site, and lots of airfields have been redeveloped, you're then putting in foundations.

"It's then that you're bringing this material to the surface and into contact with people. That's really what happened at Dalgety Bay."

Sepa has told BBC Scotland it is to investigate the situation at Kinloss.

Dr Paul Dale, the agency's radioactive substances specialist, said: "It does seem that there's an absence of records about where material was deposited.

"We need to look at that, and we need to look at the assessments that have been done by the MoD and evaluate whether they're appropriate and evaluate whether anything further is needed."

The MoD has not commented on the suggestion that land outside the base may be contaminated.

But it said a review of the quality of the land at RAF Kinloss was already under way, ahead of the transfer of the base to the Army.

A spokesman said: "The MoD is committed to assessing land quality across the entire defence estate. This robust, proactive programme mirrors industry best practice, ensures the land is suitable for use and will not cause harm to people or the environment.

"RAF Kinloss is considered suitable for its current use."

Is it illegal to record and post noisy neighbors having sex?

19 hrs.

A recent post by a Reddit user who shared a friend's cyber-savvy solution for noisy?neighbors?having sex?attracted almost 2,000 comments. To teach the loud lovers a lesson, the friend reportedly recorded the cries of passion (along with someone shouting for the couple to shut up), uploaded the recording to "social sound platform" SoundCloud, then posted a note on the offending neighbors' door telling them exactly what happened.

"This is really tapping into SoundCloud's full potential," wrote one commenter.?

"That was, without a doubt, the worst Ke$ha song I've heard yet," wrote another. "It's like she's not even trying anymore..."

Hilarity continued to ensue. One Redditor even remixed the NSFW sounds into a dubstep before SoundCloud removed the naughty noises from its site. Of course, the recording clearly violated SoundCloud's terms of service, which?prohibits content that is "abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, racist, sexually explicit, ethnically or culturally offensive, indecent" ? you get the picture.?What's not so clear, however, is whether recording your neighbors having sex and then?posting it on the Internet is breaking the law.

SoundCloud is a new platform, but shaming neighbors by sharing their sex sounds on the Internet is nothing new ?? neither is the question of its legality. Way back in 2010 (half a century in Internet years), one such sleep-deprived netizen crowdsourced Yahoo! Answers with the very same question:

?Is it illegal to record neighbors having sex and put it on the internet?

JUST THE NOISE not the sex.

There was no real consensus, but no shortage of opinions, ranging from noisy culprits having no expectation of privacy and a suggestion to sound proof with foam board, as well as one request to record the neighbors and "send it to me haha."

"You shouldn't put it on the Internet," wrote one Yahoo commentator named Jack.?"But you can get away with it as long as they aren't identified. Putting it on their door is not okay, as they will then press charges for spying and blackmail."

Forget that infamously unreliable forum;?even experts like?Mark Rasch, former head of the United States Department of Justice computer crime unit, told me that there's no clear answer.

"You could possibly make a crime out of it under the federal wiretap law," known formally as the Electronic Communications and Privacy Act, explained Rasch, who is now director at?CyberSecurity and Privacy Consulting, CSC. "But I'm not aware of any cases where someone is capable of being heard in the public has been prosecuted," he said in an interview.?

?As?Jeff Hermes, director of the Digital Media Law Project, Berkman Center for Internet & Society?told me, "As soon as you get past the federal wiretap law, you're entirely dealing with state-by-state laws about concealed recording." Some states require only one person be aware the conversation is being recorded; in other states, both parties must know. Here's a state-by-state guide reporters use for that very reason.?

Both Rasch and Hermes deem criminal prosecution iffy, and they don't put much stock in a civil lawsuit, either. That's because of a bit of tort law, which covers behavior that isn't necessarily illegal, but still causes unfair suffering. In this case, legal eagles might look at "intrusion upon seclusion":?

One who intentionally intrudes, physically or otherwise, upon the solitude or seclusion of another or his private affairs or concerns, is subject to liability to the other for invasion of his privacy, if the intrusion would be highly offensive to a reasonable person.

"It's an interesting factual question," noted?Hermes. "Maybe there was an intent to inflict emotional distress and cause embarrassment," what with the note posted on the door. "But nobody else could tell who it was (on the recording) so how could it cause embarrassment??The result would vary depending on how individual states interpret their common law torts."

But did the loud couple in question have an expectation of privacy? Not so much.

"Obviously people engaged in intimate activity don't expect that they will be recorded, but if you live in apartment with thin walls, you run the risk of not only that your neighbors will hear you but that their observations may find their way to the Internet," Rasch said.?

So recording your neighbors having sex and posting it on the Internet: Legal or not??

"It's probably offensive and silly and?all that stuff, but probably not a crime," concluded Rasch.

So there you have it.?Facebook, Google, Anonymous, the feds, recently deposed "revenge porn" czar Hunter Moore ? we worry so much about how larger-than-life entities might ?? legally or illegally?? exploit us on the Internet. We can lock down our privacy settings, encrypt our nude pictures or stay off the Internet entirely. Yet as the Reddit post reminds us, the business we fail to keep private can be exploited at the hands ?? and recording devices ?? of our very own neighbors. And there really isn't much we can do about that.

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about online privacy, then asks you to join her on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Security Companies In Vancouver : How They Can Help Your ...

May 17th, 2012 at 11:19 pm

Needless it might be to say, there are just so many burglaries as well as thefts that are happening around especially in business oriented places. This can be a signal for all those business companies to improve their safety methods. Possessing guards or any other forms of personnel for protection is a must. Nevertheless this does not suggest that you will no longer need to have any other kind of security like a video camera which can be provided by Vancouver security companies. People in uniform are quite noticeable to felons so they try numerous strategies of stealing that will make them not too obvious to such security personnel. But with a surveillance camera in your business oriented site, just about every move which a criminal will do would be extremely obvious and would be saved.

The surveillance cameras at the moment are nothing like before. They have had so many changes in them which make them much more helpful in preserving your business? security. Most of these are described below.

Due to the recent innovations, security cameras are no longer that noticeable. They come in many forms and sizes. They can be hooked on a pen, a clock, or an alarm ? basically anything at all. There are also wireless security cameras which can be installed in places where a robber would never guess.

It is presently possible for everyone to not be constantly in the area of your business site to monitor every little thing because it is captured through your security camera. A different development of surveillance cameras is available today. They are internet security video cameras that enable anyone to look at what is taking place even when they are in a remote place and not on the monitoring program. You can request a certain company for your video camera to send information through LAN system or IP address for it to be able to do the one earlier mentioned.

A great factor about surveillance cameras of today is that they no longer use VHS tapes. Data is generally saved in more compact storage devices like a micro card. Besides being small and not taking up too much storage area, this card can be manipulated such that information captured and stored in it could be edited in a computer.

Having learned everything above about security cameras and surveillance cameras Vancouver suppliers, there?s no question that by now you will definitely find these devices a great help in improving your small business security. Installing them and having some individuals to guard your own businesses as well is the best thing that you could ever do to safeguard your business.

5 Quick Tips for Local Email Marketing at the Counter |

5 Quick Tips for Collecting More Emails at the Counter photoThe rise of today?s e-tailers is not without a great email marketing strategy. Customers see new products and sales in their inbox every morning and are enticed to keep visiting the website. This is not unlike local email marketing at your brick and mortar store or restaurant, where a good email marketing list can keep customers coming back into the store, or at least keep them paying attention.

Here are a few quick tips on how to collect email addresses by getting customers to put pen to paper at your counter and give up their most sacred digital key ? the one that goes to their inbox.

1. Be creative: Red Hanger, a dry cleaner in Utah, uses a marked Post-it pad where customers can write their email address and hand it to the cashier. This eliminates any worry about jotting down an email address where everyone can see it.

2. Make it easy: Some businesses use a fishbowl to collect business cards, but since not everyone has business cards, you might try asking for their email address at the point of sale like Yankee Candle does.

3. Make it interesting: Swipely offers a Text to Join program where merchants can promote their unique code on a table tent, poster or chalkboard. Customers simply text that code from their mobile phone and can sign up for the merchant?s loyalty program?to start?receiving?emails and rewards automatically.

4. Turn it into a game: Hold a monthly contest that gives something away for free in exchange for their email address. The customer gets a prize, and you gain entrance to a mailbox that they review daily.

5. Double up on the feedback: If you use comment or feedback cards, make sure to leave an optional line for people to add their email address to your email list.

Additionally, you?ll want to keep these folks on your list, so it?s important to send?great email newsletters once you have their trust.?Although you should also collect email addresses on your website, your in-store methods capture customers at their peak of interest.

Just a note: The key to customer loyalty in small business is to reward your best customers. Luckily, 93% of people already have your loyalty card in their wallet, find out how.

Gene study links stronger memories, PTSD

Finding may help explain roots of the condition

Web edition : Monday, May 14th, 2012

A certain genetic signature gives some people the ability to form stronger memories. But that edge also has a dark side: increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Although the genetic effect is small, the results help scientists better understand the link between especially powerful memories and sensitivity to past trauma.

Scientists led by neuroscientist Dominique de Quervain of the University of Basel in Switzerland looked at how genetic differences related to a memory task. A population of 723 healthy young Swiss adults viewed 72 photographs. After a 10-minute wait, the volunteers were asked to remember as many images as possible.

Volunteers who could remember more pictures carried a particular DNA signature in at least one copy of a gene that encodes protein kinase C alpha. In animal studies, this protein has been shown to play a role in the formation of emotional memories. The volunteers? heightened recall was true for disturbing, pleasant and neutral pictures.

Further evidence came from brain scans performed in a different group of Swiss people. While viewing the pictures, people with the genetic signature had stronger brain activation in parts of the prefrontal cortex compared with those who lacked the genetic feature, the researchers report online the week of May 14 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Because memory is known to be an important part of PTSD, de Quervain and his team wanted to see if their results might have importance beyond the laboratory. The researchers looked at the genes of 347 people who had survived the brutal 1994 Rwandan genocide and now live in a refugee camp in Uganda. The genocide was marked by extreme violence and war rape. About a third of those studied met the clinical criteria for PTSD.

Among the Rwandan refugees, having the strong-memory signature was linked to a doubled risk of PTSD compared with the rate among those without the genetic signature. The signature was relatively rare in the Rwandan population, even though it was almost universal among the Swiss.

?I think this work is of great theoretical interest,? says PTSD researcher Roger Pitman of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The study supports the idea that stronger memories are linked to a heightened risk of PTSD, a theory that?s been discussed but hasn?t had much evidence, he says. ?This is another piece of the puzzle.?

The results explain only a small sliver of memory formation and PTSD. ?But that doesn?t mean this gene isn?t important,? de Quervain says. The results give a deeper understanding of the link between strong memories and diseases such as PTSD, he says. Studying the role of protein kinase C alpha may reveal more about how memories form and perhaps even why some prove so troubling.

D. de Quervain et al. PKC? is genetically linked to memory capacity in healthy subjects and to risk for posttraumatic stress disorder in genocide survivors. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Published online the week of May 14, 2012. doi: 10.1073/pnas.1200857109.

Huawei Ascend D1 hits the FCC with pentaband HSPA+

Image

Of the trio of Huawei's Diamond-class smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress in February, the dual-core Ascend D1 got the least amount of buzz. Today, however, the handset gets its opportunity to bask in the spotlight, since it's the first of the group to obtain the FCC's nod of approval. No huge revelations were given, but the docs confirm quadband GSM and pentaband HSPA+ / WCDMA, a welcome treat for AWS fans. As always, we can't assume any carrier affiliation here, but at least we know the unlocked versions will work on AT&T and T-Mobile without a hitch. It looks like Huawei's still on track for a Q2 release -- let's hope the same is true for the D1's older siblings.
